Description

"I’m not afraid of the surgery. What scares me most is losing my eyesight forever… never being able to see my family again."

While most people at 28 are working hard to build their future, Lee Wai Seng is racing against time to prevent permanent blindness.

From Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, Wai Seng was once an ordinary office worker who lived a simple life centred around his job and family. Today, however, his life has come to a halt due to severe vision loss, making even the simplest daily activities extremely difficult.

Wai Seng first noticed blurred vision in one eye in 2021. At the time, his family believed it was caused by fatigue or excessive screen time, and he eventually resigned from his job to rest. But within just a few years, his condition deteriorated rapidly. What started as blurred vision in one eye gradually progressed to near total vision loss in both eyes.

Now, even moving around at home requires him to feel his way along the walls, step by step. He has almost completely lost the ability to live independently and has become increasingly isolated from the outside world.

In June 2025, he suddenly vomited blood and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered severe fluid buildup in his brain, requiring emergency surgery to save his life. Even more alarming was the discovery of a 7cm brain tumour, tightly wrapped around major arteries and attached to critical nerves.

If the condition worsens, it could not only lead to complete blindness, but also become life-threatening.

【Urgent surgery needed while there is still hope to restore his vision】

Although Wai Seng is now nearly blind, he still retains a faint sense of light, which indicates that the optic nerves have not completely died. This means there is still a chance for his vision to recover.

However, doctors have warned that urgent high-risk surgery is required to remove the tumour. If the surgery is delayed and the optic nerves are permanently damaged, he may be forced to live in darkness forever.

Wai Seng has always been a thoughtful and filial son. His mother has suffered from chronic back problems for many years, and he used to shoulder many household responsibilities. Now, however, he struggles even to stand steadily and has previously fallen due to his poor vision, leaving his family heartbroken.

His 66-year-old father, Lee Soong, works as a locksmith and earns about RM5,000 per month. His 60-year-old mother, Goh Chooi Mei, folds joss paper at home to supplement the family income. His sister has resigned from her job to care for him, while his brother earns around RM2,600 per month, making it difficult for the family to bear additional financial burdens.

Over the years, the family’s savings have been completely depleted. They have even borrowed money from relatives to cover medical expenses and are still repaying those debts.

Facing the overwhelming cost of surgery, the family simply cannot afford it.

His mother breaks down in tears every day. What she fears most is not hardship, but watching her son slowly lose his sight.

"We are not asking for miracles… we only hope he can recover… even if it means he can just see us again."

After conducting a home visit and assessment, One Hope Charity has decided to assist in raising RM200,000 for Wai Seng’s surgery and medical treatment so that he can receive treatment as soon as possible.

The charity will also allocate RM10,000 from its Emergency Medical & Contingency Reserve Fund to support this case. The family has entrusted One Hope Charity to manage the fundraising and collect donations on their behalf.
