Description

“We waited so many years for this child, only to watch him now lying in the ICU, his tiny body hooked to tubes, fighting to survive. We ask for nothing more than for our baby to be healthy and safe. Please, we beg the public to help save our child!”

Wong Yan Zhang, a newborn from Butterworth, Penang, is the precious son of Wong Chun Kit and Chow Chieh Min, who spent six to seven years trying to conceive. The couple suffered two miscarriages during their long and emotional journey. The mother, who suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), underwent years of treatment before successfully becoming pregnant. The entire family was overjoyed to finally welcome their long-awaited baby.

The baby was born two weeks early on July 29 via emergency C-section. During a routine prenatal checkup that day, the doctor discovered excess amniotic fluid and a lotus sitting position with breech presentation. An immediate delivery was advised to prevent potential life-threatening complications for both mother and child.

Although he cried loudly at birth, just two hours later, baby Wong began struggling to breathe and had low blood sugar. He was urgently given oxygen and glucose. Medical tests confirmed that he was suffering from Severe Transient Tachypnoea of the Newborn (TTN) with High Pulmonary Pressure and Pneumonia. He is now in the ICU relying on special respiratory support equipment to survive.

【Mother with PCOS Suffered Two Miscarriages, Took 6–7 Years of Effort to Conceive】

33-year-old Chow Chieh Min suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which made conceiving extremely difficult. She spent two years adjusting her health and endured two miscarriages—one due to exhaustion and another due to food poisoning—before finally managing to carry a pregnancy to term.

Even during pregnancy, she faced two falls, but the baby held on strong and was safely delivered. The couple had high hopes and were overwhelmed with joy. Sadly, their happiness was short-lived as their newborn’s condition turned critical shortly after birth.

The baby now requires advanced respiratory equipment and round-the-clock care. The couple had prepared only RM15,000 for delivery and postnatal expenses, but the sudden emergency and rising medical bills have left them financially overwhelmed.

The couple explored the possibility of transferring their child to a government hospital, but were told that ICU beds were full. Due to the baby’s critical condition, doctors advised against moving him, as it poses a high risk to his survival. With no other options, the desperate parents turned to our foundation for help.

The father, Wong Choon Keat (39), is an air-conditioning technician earning RM3,500 per month. The mother, Chew Chet Mei (33), previously worked as a tourist guide but switched to office duties during her pregnancy, earning RM3,150. The couple also supports both sides of their parents and pays for their home and car loans. Their income barely covers their monthly living expenses.

After conducting a hospital assessment and review, One Hope Charity has officially launched a fundraising campaign to help baby Wong Yan Zhang continue receiving the life-saving medical treatment he urgently needs.
