Low Shin Ying – artificial cochlea implantation surgery

100%

“I love to go to school to learn new knowledge, I love my classmates and teachers”

Low Shin Ying who is currently 7 years old and is in standard 1 is similar to normal children who are active and curious about the world around here. Her hearing difficulties has led her parents to be worried about her future and may affect her interest in education. We hope that this generous society can donate and help her to leave the world of silence.

From Sungai Pelek, Selangor, Shin Ying’s parents did not realize her hearing condition as she respond to conversations. The only thing is progression in speech learning is slower.

When she was 3 years old, her parents realized that she has ear discharge. After bringing her for checkup, doctors diagnosed her with hearing difficulties in both ears. In the same year, she underwent left cochlea implantation in Pusat Perubatan UKM.

The surgery fees costed RM90,000. Her family’s financial condition has allowed them to apply for medical aids and successfully gaining RM55,000 medical aid from the hospital. Rm10,000 plus is contributed by a charity group and the remaining is paid by borrowing from relatives and friends.

After surgery, she underwent speech therapy every Monday in a language center till now. Each therapy session is 45 minutes and it cost RM120 per session. The toll charges for the journey is RM50. Though it’s a sum of money and a long travelling journey, her mother insists to send her for the therapy as Sin Ying loves to learn new knowledge.

Her left ear is implanted with artificial cochlea and her right ear is using hearing aid. The hearing aid in her left ear could not improve her condition. As a result, doctors suggested her to go for artificial cochlea implantation surgery to allow her to hear normally.

Shin Ying is currently in standard 1 and her family hopes that she can go for the surgery soonest possible to ensure that she will not lose interest in her education due to her hearing condition.

During the interview session, Shin Ying told us that she likes to go to school and learn new knowledge and she loves her classmate and teachers as they took good care of her.

As she has OKU card, the hospital will waive her surgery fee but her family is required to pay for the artificial cochlea which cost RM65,000. Her family could only afford RM10,000 and they are still lacking a sum of RM55,000. As a result, they came forward to seek help from us and hope that the generous public can donate to help her.

Her father, Low Gaik Siang, 35, is a cruise chef who draws a monthly income of RM4,000 with an 8 months contract. Once the contract has ended, he needs to wait for 2 months to renew his contract. Her mother, Pua Soo Chin, 30 is a housewife.

Her parents agree to allow One Hope Charity & Welfare Berhad to take charge of the fundraising of the artificial cochlea’s cost and at the same time accumulating the donations from the generous public.
