“It’s not tiring. Just because she is my daughter, I will carry her until the day I can’t.”

A great father from Penang Island has been carrying his daughter for 11 years as his daughter suffered from brain injury and paralyzed when she was only four months old. Since then, he has been inseparable from his daughter. Whenever they go out, he will carry his daughter – since she was just an infant, until she has grown up – without having a word of complaint.

Saw Ern Yee is 11 years old this year. When she was four months old, she accidentally hit her head at her babysitter’s house. A brain scan confirmed that her brain was injured. From then on, she has blurry vision, her limbs were paralyzed, and she was unable to talk.

Ern Yee is the first child to her father Saw Chee Haw and mother Chin Wai Boom. After the accident, the couple once complained and asked that why such incident would happen to their daughter. But later when they looked at baby Ern Yee, they knew that instead of complaining, it would be better for them to stay strong. Their baby girl needed them.

Taking into consideration that the mother may not have enough strength to carry Ern Yee when she grows up, the responsibility of carrying the daughter falls on the father.

Since then, Chee Haw has become the connector between his daughter and the people out there. He carries his daughter every day, from their house to the physiotherapy center for physiotherapy session. When the family goes out, he will carry her and bring her along, and not leaving her back home due to her physical condition. Everything remains the same for the past decades, and the only difference is that his daughter is growing up, and it also means that he is getting older. He needs more strength to pick up his daughter.

Ern Yee is paralyzed, and her spine could not support her sitting posture. Therefore, she could not use a normal wheelchair. She needs a special wheelchair to support her body so that she could sit.

However, a special wheelchair is not cheap. Her parents could not afford it. Hence, they applied for help from One Hope Charity. After house visitation and review of the case, One Hope Charity decided to donate a special wheelchair to Ern Yee to reduce the financial burden of the family, and at the same time to prevent this great father from being too tired.

On the day when they received the wheelchair, the father brought Ern Yee to One Hope Charity’s office like how he usually does. But Ern Yee is no longer an infant or a toddler. She is now 11 years old, and her size is same as other children of her age. When asked if he would feel tired, the father said: “No, I have already get used to it.”

Asking about the future of his daughter, he said: “I can’t imagine what will happen to her if I am no longer around. But as long as I am still alive, I will always take care of her.”

The love of this father to his daughter could be seen from their interactions. As soon as Ern Yee makes some noise, her father will know exactly what she wants. They understand each other, and their love for each other could tell from their eyes. People around them were deeply touched by them. Although this father did not speak out about his love, but he uses his action to show the world how great a father’s love can be.

One Hope Charity would like to thank all the well-wishers for your donations, so that we could allocate funds to assist families that need help urgently.
