Hor Fun hawker Yuen Lee Lock, who used to run a stall named “Lock Kee” in Butterworth, Penang has passed away. The great taste of his prawn hor fun will never be forgotten by his customers. His last wish was also being fulfilled when his adopted son, who had lost contact for some time, managed to attend the funeral and paid him the last respect.

77-year-old Lee Lock started to sell prawn hor fun at Butterworth since he was young. His wife fell ill and passed away three years ago but the passing of his wife did not stop him from continuing his business. He cycled 6km everyday to the coffee shop where “Loke Kee” is located – rain or shine.

He decided to give up his business in mid of August last year after having knee pain. He had a wish of spending the rest of his life in an old folks home.

With the help of One Hope Charity, Lee Lock moved into an old folks home in early September last year, and passed away around 5am on June 2.

During his nine-month stay in the old folks home, representatives from One Hope Charity often visited him, and helped him to buy things that he needed. When movement control order (MCO) was not imposed, our volunteers would also fetched him out to buy medicines, or bought him his favourite fruits like grapes.

Lee Lock was down with fever in late May and the number of Covid-19 cases was high. Therefore, One Hope Charity had arranged medical personnel to the old folks home to conduct random tests. The result was out on the next day and he was tested negative. However, he was found dead at 5am the day after.

Lee Lock was one of the beneficiaries of One Hope Charity’s promise of the last journey. His funeral was done based on his wishes.

Lee Lock’s eldest brother and adopted son were also present at the funeral. His adopted son felt bad and cried for his act of neglecting his adoptive father. However, he was thankful to One Hope Charity for taking good care of his adoptive father until he passed away peacefully.

Lee Lock was cremated and his ashes would be kept together with his wife at Chang Hua Kor Moral Uplifting Society in Bukit Mertajam.
