An octogenarian, who had no children, passed away due to illness. He left behind his 67-year-old wife. One Hope Charity sponsored his funeral expenses and the columbarium, with the hope that he could rest in peace. At the same time, One Hope Charity also cares for his widow, hoping that she will have some support in her old age

80-year-old Hawker Hing Choo Lai, who sold Lobak for his entire life, stopped his business two years ago due to uric acid, and he later fell at home and broke his leg. His nephew and niece sent him to a nursing home and paid all the expenses.

Hing Choo Lai stayed in the nursing home for 16 months and he was sent to the hospital in December last year due to respiratory problems. However, the hospital at that time did not allow family members to visit him. His wife, who is disabled, wandered outside the hospital but was not allowed to enter. On January 3, he passed away without having a chance to see his wife for the last time.

As his nephew and niece have been paying for the living expenses of the two elders, they were unable to afford Choo Lai’s funeral expenses. Hence, they approached One Hope Charity and applied for assistance to pay for the expenses of the old man’s funeral, cremation and columbarium.

His 67-year-old wife Teo Ka Hong was amputated eight years ago due to an accident and diabetes, and she has been relying on a prosthetic since then. Before the husband was admitted to the nursing home, the couple rented a room in Bukit Mertajam but after he moved to the nursing home, the wife managed her daily life by herself despite having mobility problems.

Ka Hong does not want to move to the nursing home. She relies on the Welfare Department financial aid and financial support from her nephew and niece to live. Therefore, One Hope Charity will continue to make sure that the old woman is well taken care of, and will also send food supply to her regularly, hoping that she will have some support.
