Suffering from the incurable disease of muscular dystrophy and seeing his body losing control and his muscles shrinking day by day, 52-year-old Lim Boon Kian from Bukit Mertajam in Penang has been relying on his faith to stay positive for the past 20 years. He has repeatedly persuaded himself to be more optimistic, hopes for a miracle so that he can stands up one day.

Some 20 years ago when Lim Boon Kian was just 30 years old, one of his toes started to feel numb and weak, and slowly all his toes became numb and weak; he gradually began to be unable to climb the stairs and needed help to complete certain actions.

After he went through several examinations, he was diagnosed with neurogenic muscular dystrophy. This is an incurable disease and what is even more tragic is that his body will slowly atrophied and eventually become paralysed. The bad news shocked him and he almost collapsed. In the past, he got his mental support by copying Buddhist scriptures and chanting Buddhist mantras.

About seven or eight years ago, he was unable to walk anymore and needed to use a wheelchair to move around. At the end of 2020, he was completely immobile from the neck down, and now, only his fingers can move. He is constantly bedridden and needed care. Originally, he has a friend who was taking care of him, but in April, his friend was struck at the Kedah checkpoint and was unable to return to Malaysia due to the pandemic, resulting in no one to take care of him at his home for a few days.

When his sister came to look for him, she discovered that he fell on the ground with excrement all over his body. When his sister sent him to the hospital for emergency treatment, he was also found to have suffered from severe bedsores. As he was unable to defecate, the doctor had made a stoma in his abdomen to help him with excretion. Since no one could take care of him, his siblings had to place him in a nursing home and they had to bear the expenses.

Before he fell ill, Boon Kian was a salesman selling car accessories. His income was unstable and he could not work since about 10 years ago. Currently, he is relying on the Welfare Department’s financial aid of RM450 a month to support himself.

He originally had eight brothers and sisters, but two of whom have passed away. And now, there are only five sisters and one brother left. The patients is the youngest son in his family and his two older sisters also suffered from muscular dystrophy, but their conditions are not as severe as Boon Kian. However, his two sisters are also paralysed on their feet, and need to get around on wheelchairs.
