A self-reliant widow had to have her calf amputated due to diabetes. After two years wearing her prosthetic leg, she is in need of a replacement due to damages caused from floods. One Hope Charity hoped to provide aid in getting a new prosthetic and get her back up her feet once more.

The numerous flood occurrences has led to a widow’s prosthetic limb severely damaged from soaking inside the water. The association will be using the public donation to customise a new prosthetic limb to help her get back up her feet and support her grandson on her own.

Siti Zaleha Binti Salleh, 57, has been suffering from diabetes for many years. She was forced to amputate her left calf because of a glass cut three years ago and the wound could not heal for a long period of time. She received social insurance assistance in 2019 to cover the fee for her prosthetic.

Her home is located in Kubang Semang, Bukit Mertajam here, a low-lying area where floods frequently occurred during heavy thunderstorms. In order to clean and take care of housework during the flood, she had to wade through the water wearing her prosthetic and raising the furniture above the water level has made it much more arduous. The repeated floods not only made her exhausted, but also her prosthetic limb was gradually worn out as well.

Although she felt deeply uncomfortable wearing her worn and torn prosthetic limb, she could not let go of it because it is only her only mobility aid to keep her standing. The cost of replacing a prosthetic limb may only cost thousands of ringgits, it is a hefty burden for a widow living in poverty.

Siti Zaleha’s husband passed away nine years ago due to high fever, leaving her and four children behind. Three of their daughters have already married and have their own family, while her only son, who is visually impaired, works as the Malaysian Association for the Blind in Kuala Lumpur.

For now, Siti Zaleha currently lives with her 12-year-old grandson, and occasionally makes Muruku to sell them. The family had to rely on her meager monthly salary and the RM300 aid received from the welfare bureau.

On Nov 28 last year, a flash flood strikes Penang which led to the water level rising 3 feet above their home. She and her grandson were settled in a public hall for shelter, but the prosthetic she had worn for two years has been severely damaged due to long exposure to water. She had sought assistance from the state council, which then approached One Hope Charity to apply for sponsorship.

After home visits and review, One Hope Charity has decided to pay for the restoration of the widow’s damaged prosthetic limb, hoping that she can get back on her feet once more.

These funding are sourced from the public donations, and we are deeply appreciated for your kind heart and generous donation to bring hope and blessing to the people in need.
