64-year-old hearing and speech impaired man collects recyclable items to earn a living. Since years ago, volunteers from One Hope Charity have been showing their care towards him. Volunteers have been sending three meals a day to him on time without fail.

The old man is Poo Khi from Bukit Mertajam, Penang. Despite having difficulties in speech, he still insists on making a living through his own efforts. He pushes a trolley to collect recyclable items around Taman Mutiara and Taman Desa Damai every day and sells carton boxes, papers, bottles and other items he collected to earn some money.

Volunteers from One Hope Charity got to know him many years ago and since then, we have been sending three meals a day to him without fail, as well as dry food supplies. Volunteers would also send him old newspapers and carton boxes that he could sell. Over the years, volunteers have been taking care of him and both parties had built a basic understanding and trust.

A community initiative called the White Flag campaign has started recently. Many kind-hearted individuals have seen Poo Khi collecting recyclable items on the streets, and they wanted to offer help. However, he is unable to speak or to express his situation to others. In order to know where he stays, and enable them to send in aids and assistance, some people even tailed him home.

A resident living nearby said that Poo Khi is not alone, and he has siblings. However, he had bad experience of being tailed and robbed by someone on the street. Therefore, he would feel nervous when people follow him secretly.

With the consistent care and concern from One Hope Charity volunteers, Poo Khi has established basic trust with the volunteers. Even though he could not listen and speak but the volunteers could understand his needs through simple hand gestures. And he will only consume food provided by One Hope Charity volunteers and his family members.

Hence, we appeal to all well-wishers not to worry about Poo Khi as his daily meals are well taken care of by volunteers who have been helping him for years. We would also urge the public not to tail him so that he would not be frightened.
