【Medical Assistance-oral medication】A 70-year-old man diagnosed with liver cancer, who is elderly and frail, has been advised against surgery and chemotherapy by the doctors. Instead, they have recommended oral medication to control the disease. One Hope Charity  provided financial assistance of RM13,790.40 to support him in purchasing the required oral medication.

A 70-year-old man from Butterworth was diagnosed with liver cancer, but due to his advanced age and frail condition, surgery and chemotherapy were not recommended by the doctors. Instead, they advised him to undergo treatment with oral medications. One Hope Charity allocated RM13,790.40 from their "Emergency Medical Fund" to support him in purchasing the necessary oral medications.

Mr. Keh Eng Huat had blood tests two years ago that indicated liver issues. Following further detailed examinations at the Alor Setar General Hospital, it was confirmed that he had both hepatitis B and liver cancer. Doctors informed him that his liver was showing signs of atrophy, but he had not experienced any pain at that point. He began taking medications in March 2022, and the cost of the medication was initially covered by the National Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA). However, MAKNA's assistance was only available until April of the same year. Mr. Keh needed to take two boxes of medication per month.

Before his retirement, Mr. Keh worked as a freelance painter, which meant he did not benefit from employee provident funds or social insurance. His wife is a housewife, and they have two unmarried sons. The family resides in a government-subsidized housing unit.

Because his sons were unable to afford the expensive medication costs, they sought assistance from the One Hope Charity. After a home visit and review,  One Hope Charity decided to provide support for his oral medications.

ONE HOPE CHARITY determined the medical fee needed for assistance. We did not start fundraising because the medical fee was less than RM20,000. Instead, it made good use of the usual well-meaning donations to assist him.
