A 13-year-old-boy, Logenthiran A/L Ramu is suffering from the rare congenital disorder known as CLOVES syndrome since birth, leading to his poor development and the growth of numerous tumours in his body. Doctor informed his mother that only two people in Malaysia have this syndrome, with her son being the second, while the other individual is in Kuala Lumpur.

CLOVES syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized by a combination of large collections (masses) of fatty tissue, complex vascular malformations, patches of overgrown skin, spine problems, other bone and joint abnormalities and stiff or weak muscles. The syndrome is a recently described rare entity with a total of less than 200 cases reported worldwide.

Logenthiran A/L Ramu, a 13-year-old boy from Butterworth, Penang, was found to have issues during prenatal examination at 8 months in the womb, but the doctor did not elaborate. After birth, he was diagnosed with Proteus syndrome by doctors, causing him to have developmental issues. Until the age 5, doctor informed that the boy was not suffer from Proteus syndrome, but another even rarer syndrome called CLOVES syndrome.

According to the doctor, his internal organs on the left side of his body are significantly larger than those on the right side. He also has a range of issues including inability to speak and walk, hearing problems, severe myopia, frequent body spasms, and involuntary drooling, hence he holds an OKU card.

His father passed away in 2021 due to heart disease. His 44-year-old mother suffers from a mental illness, which is under medication control, and she takes care of Logenthiran at home. He also has a 15-year-old brother who is still in school.

They live in a wooden house in Butterworth, renting a room for RM150 per month. Due to a lack of income, they are unable to pay the rent, but the kind landlord allows them to stay rent-free. Currently, the family relies on a monthly assistance of RM500 from social welfare department and the landlord’s support to make ends meet.

Upon receiving the request for assistance, One Hope Charity sent representatives to conduct a home visit. The board of directors decided to provide assistance with food supplies, diapers and wet wipes to alleviate their burden.
