Chee Tham Chai, 67, from Teluk Kumbar, Penang, suffered from larynx cancer, caused his throat removed and now relies on digital electrolarynx for speech. The previous digital electrolarynx he used for years is damaged, and he  has applied to One Hope Charity for assistance.

Twelve years ago, he discovered that his voice was gradually getting smaller. After taking traditional Chinese medicine, he recovered.

Unexpectedly, the symptoms recurred, and the traditional Chinese medicine gradually became ineffective. Then, he went to government hospital for examination and was confirmed to have larynx cancer.

In 2013, his condition worsened, reaching stage four of larynx cancer. At the time, he was living in Johor Bahru and working in Singapore. He returned to Penang to reside with his sister, regularly visiting the government hospital for treatment and medication. After the tumor removal from his vocal chords in December 2014, he underwent radiotherapy, and since 2016, he has been using an digital electrolarynx for speech and the device now has developed issues and needs to be replaced.

Chee Tham Chai currently lives alone in a small wooden house. The kind-hearted landlord doesn’t charge him rent, so he helps out the landlord occasionally. He only relies on limited savings and some financial assistance from friends and landlord to sustain his life. He is unable to afford a new digital electrolarynx, he sought assistance from One Hope Charity.

Upon receiving his request for assistance, representatives from ONE HOPE CHARITY conducted a home visit. The board of directors approved the provision of a new digital electrolarynx, making communication easier for him.
