Lim Heng Sam, 73, used to work as a painter, but he stopped work 10 years ago after his left leg had to be amputated due to his diebetic condition. Mr. Lim was bound to his wheelchair and had to rely on the monthly welfare aid of RM350.

On the other hand, his wife and caretaker Ng Ah Mooi, 67, was formerly a factory worker, but 4 years ago she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer after noticing frequent instances of diarrhea. Mrs. Ng was suspended from work and needed to go to hospital for follow-up observation every six months. Her income now relies on the provident fund to make a living.

Expressing self-guilt for his wife to carry his weight, Mr. Lim had sought support from the One Hope Charity & Welfare for financial aid to get a prosthetic leg. He strongly hoped that being able to get up from his wheel-chair and taking good care on himself would reduce his wife’s burden.

Whatever life has thrown at them, the elderly couple has always been there hand-in-hand to help and support one another for past decades and continue living a frugal life.

However, On July 4 2019, Mr Lim was hospitalised after getting involved in a car accident. He had suffered a head injury and a minor fracture on his left arm, with his prosthetic leg damaged from the incident.

Due to his low blood sugar level, Mr Lim fell into a coma and was hospitalised again. His wife was unable to take care of her husband, hence sending him to a nursing home. Although Mr Lim was awake and was able to swallow food, he had to rely on a catheter for water intake to avoid pulmonary fluid accumulation. Mr Lim was back on the wheelchair once more due to mobility issues, while his wife pleaded for One Hope Charity for financial assistance for the nursing expenses as well as for his prosthetic leg.

After receiving an application for help in August last year, One Hope Charity & Welfare had provided financial aid on adult diapers as well as three-month expenditure for the nursing care services, while also approving the application on the financial assistance for a new prosthetic leg. On November 9, Mr Lim was again back on his feet and was advised to do frequent exercises.
