Everyone will still remember baby Reese’s name. She suffered from a rare genetic disease – Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and needed an excessive amount of RM9mil for gene therapy. Last December, One Hope Charity launched fundraising for baby Reese, which gained concerns from the public. The public also generously donated to fund her treatment.

Before One Hope Charity took over the fundraising, her parents had sought help from a crowdfunding platform, GIVE.asia, to raise funds for their daughter. However, the parents were “uncomfortable” with the operation mode of the platform, so they turned to One Hope Charity for help. At that time, the parents applied to terminate the fundraising, which was approved. One Hope Charity also followed the standard operating procedure (SOP) for new applications, conducted a home visit, and had a case review. After that, One Hope Charity’s committee also held a meeting to accept and approve the assistance. The parents also came out with an agreement with GIVE.asia through email.

One Hope Charity held a press conference on December 13 to officially launch fundraising for Reese and successfully raised RM9mil in seven days and 22 hours. The amount includes the RM670,229.68 raised through GIVE.asia, which the crowdfunding platform promised to transfer to One Hope Charity’s bank account.

However, as of April 11, GIVE.asia has not fulfilled its promise. The parents filed a police report the same day, and One Hope Charity also sent a letter of demand to GIVE.asia through our entrusted lawyer.

On April 11 and April 15 this year, One Hope Charity posted about the RM670,229.68 raised for Baby Reese on our official website and Facebook page. The posts attracted public attention and questions, prompting GIVE.asia to respond to this.

In a statement then, GIVE.asia claimed that One Hope Charity could not provide them with the documents they requested, so they could not conduct verification, which resulted in them failing to release the funds. The statement also claimed they would provide the donors with a full refund.

However, the statement’s content distorted the facts and misled the public, so One Hope Charity and the patient’s parents – Jason Tan and Rachel Chung- held a joint press conference to reveal the truth.

Reply to GIVE.asia's false remarks:

1) Why did OHC refuse to give the Annual Report and the unredacted invoice / transfer slip to Give.asia?

(i) Annual Report - We did not refuse to provide. In fact, we asked what is the specific information they would want to see in our Annual Report for their payout verification. Unfortunately, no reply is given.

(ii) Invoice - There is a binding agreement between pharmaceutical supplier, PPUM as recipient of medicine and OHC as payor, that no disclosure to third party is allowed. Therefore, we had to comply with our obligation.

2) Parents refused to allow GIVE.asia to transfer RM670,229.68 to Hospital UMMC/PPUM.

Parents asked GIVE.asia to contact Hospital personally as they did not understand the transaction process of medicines and payment between medicine suppliers and hospitals. The parents later learned that UMMC/PPUM refused to accept the funds directly because the RM670,229.68 was only part of the price of the Zolgensma, which the hospital could not legally use and Reese had no unpaid bills at the hospital.

Dato Chua, Chairman of the One Hope Charity & Welfare, stated that the organization will seek legal advice regarding whether or not to proceed with legal action. He emphasized that all donations, which come from hard-earned money of the public and are a lifeline for vulnerable groups, need to be carefully considered.

He said that since Give.asia announced that they would return the donations to the donors, One Hope Charity’s careline, Facebook page, and social media have received many calls and messages requesting that the refunded amount be donated to the One Hope Charity. Therefore, One Hope Charity announced its account number today for donors who requested for the donation to be transferred to One Hope Charity.

Emergency Medical Reserve Fund

“To avoid further delay of Reese's treatment during the golden period, we had used the amount from our emergency reserve fund to pay in advance, and this is also the fund that is supposed to assist more poor and sick patients in need. Therefore, to recover the shortfall of the promised amount of MYR670,229.68 to be transferred from Give.asia, we open the donation link to welcome donors to do their donation to One Hope Charity.
