Owshithan A/L Samatram born on 17/06/2017 (2 weeks old baby boy) is suffering from transposition of the great arteries. Transposition of the great arteries is a heart defect that occurs from birth, a congenital heart disease. The 2 major arteries that carry blood away from the heart, the aorta and pulmonary artery are switched/transposed. Transposition of the great arteries is a cyanotic heart defect. This means there is decreased oxygen in the blood that is pumped from the heart to the rest of the body.
In transposition of the great arteries, the blood goes to the lungs, pick up oxygen, returns to the heart, and then flows back to the lungs without ever going to the body. Blood from the body returns to the heart and goes back to the body without ever picking up oxygen in the lungs.
Owshithan was detected suffering from this illness during his birth as he has serious difficulty in breathing (shortness of breath) and resulted deficient oxygenation of the blood. Owshitan was immediately being admitted to Penang General Hospital during the second (2nd) day of his birth to undergo balloon atrial septostomy surgery to enlarge a hole between his right atrium and left atrium to improve oxygenation of the blood. He is currently being monitored in the ICU awaiting for the 2nd operation schedule to be fixed.
Doctor is in the opinion that Owshithan need to be transferred to the specialist hospital soonest as possible to undergo the 2nd operation in order to save his little life. The 2nd operation is referring to the Arterial Switch Operation for transposition of great arteries. It is an open heart surgical procedure used to correct the transposition of the great arteries. The Arterial Switch Operation cost about RM80,000.
Owshithan comes from Bagan Serai, Perak. His father Mr Smatram (33 years old) is currently serving sentence in jail and will be released on April 2018. His mother, Sasikala (29 years old) is a housewife who is currently staying in her siblings? place. Owshithan has one elder brother (3 years old) taking care by his grandmother.
Owshithan?s family members has agree to let One Hope Charity & Welfare Berhad to be fully in charge in the fund raising activities and receive donations from the public being Owshithan?s heart disease surgery?s cost and expenses.
