Urgent Fundraising – Fong Yu Ming (Scoliosis & Foramen Magnum Decompression)

URGENT

The shy little boy began to have a crooked neck when he was four. During a doctor’s examination then, his scoliosis was 18 degrees. He went for regular check-ups until he was seven, and his scoliosis had become 40 degrees at that time. The doctor referred him for physiotherapy, and he put on corrective braces to prevent worsening his condition. His spine was 56 degrees curved when he was eleven.

The journey of his single mother bringing him for medical treatment was thorny. After many years of medical consultations, his condition did not progress. His single mom shed tears and begged One Hope Charity for help. Detailed examination confirmed he had Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), and the curve in his spine is now 90 degrees showing a C shape. What made his condition worse was there were hydrops in his spinal cord. Therefore, he needs surgery to remove the fluid before the spine correction surgery.

12-year-old boy, Fong Yu Ming, lives in Kulim in Kedah. He is now experiencing headaches, pain and numbness in his feet and other symptoms, and he has slightly uneven legs. His teachers do not allow him to join active activities. Even so, Yu Ming needs to undergo surgery as soon as possible to prevent his condition from deteriorating. Otherwise, his life may be in danger. His widowed mother is worried about him.

【Yu Ming was born with a hole in his heart. Fortunately, the hole closed on its own when he was four. He also inherited mild asthma from his mother, but his most severe medical condition is 90-degree scoliosis】

Yu Ming grew up in a family full of love from his parents. Since he was diagnosed with scoliosis, the Fong family went everywhere to seek medical treatment to heal the boy. When he was eleven, the doctor confirmed his spine had a 56-degree curve. He was supposed to undergo surgery on 31 March last year. Still, his doctor-in-charge kept changing from one person to another, and one of the doctors also discovered there was hydrops in his spinal cord, so the spinal correction surgery was postponed.

His mother, Lu Yue Zhen, was at a loss, so she sought assistance from One Hope Charity under the referral of a friend. When the boy attended an arranged consultation, the doctor diagnosed him with Foramen Magnum Decompression, and he needed Duroplastry Surgery before his spinal correction surgery.

Unfortunately, during the progress of his medical treatment, his father, Fong Woei Hour, passed away four years ago due to kidney failure caused by diabetes. His father was 50 years old. His mother, Lu Yue Zhen, came from Liuzhou in Guangxi, China. After the death of her husband, Yue Zhen, who used to be a housewife, had to support her family.

Woei Hour is a vegetable hawker in a market, and now, Yue Zhen has taken over the stall, but she can’t afford to hire a helper, so she delivers vegetables to her customers alone. She earns a meagre income between RM1,200 and RM1,500 a month. She has to bear the living and education expenses of her two sons, aged 16 and 12, and care for her 84-year-old mother-in-law, making ends meet.

Yu Ming’s 16-year-old brother knows his family’s financial condition, so he used to help at the vegetable stall when he attended afternoon class, but now, the brother is in the morning session, so he goes to tuition for two hours after school and works as a part-timer in a coffee shop from evening to night to earn extra money for the family.

The single mother could not afford the surgical expenses, so she approached One Hope Charity for help. After reviewing the case following a home visit, One Hope Charity decided to raise RM80,000 for Yu Ming’s treatment. His mother agreed to fully authorise One Hope Charity to take charge of the fundraising and collect donations from the well-wishers on their behalf.
