"I visit my son every day at the hospital. I am so sad when I look at his tiny body on a breathing aid. I wish to carry and hug him, so I always hope that the doctor will come and tell me that my son can be discharged from the hospital. However, after waiting more than a month, he is still in the hospital, waiting for surgery."

Many little angels who came to the world could be born and grow up safely, but it is not certain for Muhammad Aqeel Fitri Bin Mohd Fikri, born on 19 January. He was sent to the intensive care unit due to shortness of breath since birth. The doctor confirmed that he had severe yet complex congenital heart disease, so he needed to put on a breathing aid.

The doctor said that Muhammad Aqeel Fitri's heart showed signs of swelling and needed arterial switch operation (ASO) and heart defect repair surgery as soon as possible. Otherwise, his survival rate will be almost zero.

The low-income family lives in Penaga, Penang. The parents work hard every month but can only earn a meagre income to cover their living expenses. The family even once faced the dilemma of income failing to meet their needs, so they are helpless with the surgical costs.

His mother had gestational diabetes during pregnancy. When she was 36 weeks pregnant, the doctor instructed her to go for an examination. Unexpectedly, the amniotic fluid ruptured, but the fetus was in a breech position. Therefore, the doctor decided to perform a caesarean section. The baby was born safely, weighing 2.46kg.

However, the doctor discovered that the baby had an irregular heartbeat and asthma a few hours after he was born, so the doctor sent the baby to the intensive care unit and put him on a breathing aid. A thorough examination confirmed that the baby had transposition of the great arteries (TGA), double outlet right ventricle (DORV), atrial septal defect (ASD), coarctation of the aorta (CoA), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), distal aortic arch hypoplasia, ventricular septal defect (VSD), which commonly known as a hole in the heart, cardiovascular reversal and stenosis, and others. He needed an arterial switch operation (ASO), and a heart defect repair surgery.

The baby is hospitalised for a month, and the parents go to the hospital to deliver milk and visit him every day, rain or shine. Although the baby is already one month old, they still don't have a chance to carry him, letting him feel his parents' love and support. The parents are distraught as they worry about their son's condition. What they look forward to hearing most every day is the doctor telling them that they can take their son home. However, this has not been possible yet, and now, they have to worry about his medical expenses.

His 32-year-old father, Mohd Fikri Bin Saidin, is a kitchen assistant earning RM1,200 a month; his 29-year-old mother, Nooradila Binti Zakaria, works in an eatery with a monthly salary of RM1,200. The couple has another son, aged six.

One Hope Charity decided to assist Muhammad Aqeel Fitri in raising RM130,000 for his surgical expenses following a home visit. His family agreed to fully authorise One Hope Charity to take charge of the fundraising and collect donations from the well-wishers on their behalf.
