A young couple welcomed their first child full of joy. Before she could open her eyes, the doctor rushed the baby girl to the intensive care unit for emergency rescue due to a heart problem. The now 14-day-old baby girl, Tong En Xin, suffered from a severe and rare heart problem, threatening her life. Her devastated and anxious parents were helpless about the RM90,000 in surgical expenses.

The 24-year-old couple, Tong Chee Fatt and Kee Xiao Jie from Kuala Lumpur, welcomed their first child after marriage on 14 November. As the prenatal examination showed that the fetus was normal, the couple waited to receive their daughter, En Xin, with joy and excitement.

Unexpectedly, the baby girl had abnormal breathing at birth, and the doctor diagnosed her with a severe heart defect. She is currently in the neonatal intensive care unit and relies on medications and a ventilator to survive.

【She needs surgery to reposition her two main blood vessels in the shortest time. Otherwise, it will be difficult for her to grow up healthily】

En Xin’s mother went for regular prenatal check-ups, and the doctor said the fetal heartbeat, weight and overall development were fine. Her mother gave birth to her at full term, weighing 2.85kg. However, the doctor discovered the baby’s heartbeat was weak, and the breathing was slow during a routine check-up on the newborn. After a thorough test, the doctor diagnosed En Xin with a heart problem called transposition of the great arteries with intact ventricular septum (TGAIVS).

The doctor suggested the parents arrange surgery for En Xin as soon as possible to correct the position of the two major blood vessels through aortic root replacement surgery. The surgery will improve her heart failure problem. However, the surgery is expected to cost RM90,000.

Chee Fatt and Xiao Jie entered into marriage after a stable relationship for more than two years. En Xin is their first child. The parents just started working for a few years, so they cannot afford the substantial surgical expenses. The couple’s other family members also had their burdens and could not lend a helping hand.

Chee Fatt is a tow truck driver, earning RM2,500 a month. Xiao Jie is a mobile phone sales personnel with a basic salary of RM1,800. They must pay for monthly house rentals, car loans, transportation fees, utility bills and other expenditures. Their living expenses are almost more than their income every month. Hence, they don’t have enough savings for the surgery.

The helpless couple approached One Hope Charity for help. After reviewing the case, One Hope Charity decided to assist En Xin in raising the medical expenses she needed. Her family agreed to fully authorise One Hope Charity to take charge of the fundraising and collect donations from the well-wishers on their behalf. Due to the urgent situation, One Hope Charity will allocate RM 5,000 from the "Emergency Medical Fund" to support this case.
